The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) has partnered with IBM Research to develop an automated system for grading diamond clarity.
Artificial intelligence (AI) technology uses data from tens of millions of diamonds that GIA laboratories have tested in the past, to apply to the Institute's current grading standards. The set of standards is already in limited use at GIA's New York and Carlsbad laboratories, the institute said on Monday.
Testing laboratories have been increasingly investing in artificial intelligence (AI) in recent years, as it shows more accurate and consistent results. Sarine Technologies announced an automated color and purity sorter in 2016, while GIA has been working with IBM on the joint project for about two years.
“IBM's AI technology, combined with GIA's expertise, deep data and gemological capabilities, enables allowing us to deliver advances with consistency, accuracy and speed unlike any other organization.
Initially, the program will apply to the most popular diamond sizes. GIA aims to expand the program to other sizes, shapes and qualities in the future. GIA and IBM are continuing to plan to cooperate on other projects that combine gemstone inspection with artificial intelligence.
